In the world of professional pilot training, obtaining a new type rating can be difficult for a variety of reasons. Cost, time off, simulator availability, class openings and course quality are all factors that can derail a pilot’s path to becoming an airline pilot.

Full Length Type Rating Courses
FTI’s Full Length Type Rating Course is a traditional type rating course lasting approximately 12 days. Training materials are provided in advance to pilots via an iPad app and pilots conduct approximately 40 hours of self-directed study prior to arriving on campus for training. Once on site, pilots receive 40 hours of classroom training followed by 24 hours of Full Flight Simulator training. The course concludes with an oral examination and PTS check with one of FTI’s FAA Designated Training Center Evaluators. This course is designed for the pilot who holds a multi-engine commercial certificate, has the required hours for an ATP, and is earning his first type rating or for a pilot new to Boeing or Airbus glass cockpits.
Accelerated Type Rating Courses
FTI’s Accelerated Type Rating Courses are designed for pilots with previous experience flying Boeing or Airbus glass cockpit airplanes. These courses are similar to the Full-Length Type Rating Courses except that classroom training is replaced by distance learning. Pilots complete approximately 80 hours of self-directed home study prior to arriving for training. Once on site, pilots receive an in-depth systems review followed by 24 hours of Full Flight Simulator training. As with the Full-Length Type Rating Courses, this course concludes with an oral exam and PTS check with one of FTI’s FAA Designated Training Center Evaluators.
Sometimes off the shelf just doesn’t fit. When this is the case, FTI can tailor training to meet an individual pilot’s need. Deciding whether or not to earn a type rating is a big decision. One question that needs to be answered is why now? The answers are simple, first you need to prove you won’t be a training liability and second, seniority. In the wake of recent accidents the FAA has increased the hiring requirements for new First Officers, requiring that they hold an ATP. Most air carriers will put their new hires through the same training that they put their Captains through. Should the worst happen and your airline conduct a furlough, that too will be conducted according to seniority – in reverse order.
